The Name

The Irish Government report “Building Ireland’s Smart Economy” contains references to ‘The Innovation Island’. The phrase is used to describe developing economic success through the translation of ideas into “valuable processes, products and services”.

Other than the odd reference in documentation from Irish development agencies and cross-border bodies, the phrase has remaind just that – a phrase. The IDA Ireland ad campaign positioning Ireland as “the Innovation Island” doesn’t use the phrase itself. Instead it says Ireland – Innovation Comes Naturally. Well, that’s as may be but Commercialisation requires nurturing.
